Market Towns in England are Attractive to First Time Buyers and Young Families

Not everyone wants to live or raise a family in the hustle and bustle of a busy city. More and more families are seeking out homes in areas where they can live that have attractive landscapes, family spots, intimate communities, and home grown food being sold at the local farmer’s market. These types of market towns are finding a growing demand from home buyers and the average house prices there are climbing because of the old saying “location, location, location” which is vital to selling at an optimum price.

Most offer the easy living amenities not available in a large city, but because they are a quick commute, the residents also have the desired amenities and career opportunities of a city. Therefore they get the best of both.

According to a new study conducted by Lloyds Bank, the average house price in a market town is £250,686. That average is over 7 times the average gross earnings of all full time workers.

Andy Mason, Director of Mortgages at Lloyds Bank, said, “Market towns are often particularly attractive for those looking to move into more idyllic surroundings without sacrificing many of the important amenities they currently enjoy.”

First time buyers are attracted to the market towns as most are young people and young families that are the generation most likely to be attracted to the environment offered.

With only a 40 minute commute to London, Beaconsfield in South Buchinghamshire has the highest average house price premium in England at £652,178. That is 189% higher than the county average.

Mr. Mason added, “Homes in market towns typically command a significant premium over their neighboring towns. The quality of life benefits often associated with living in such locations are still proving popular among homebuyers. Market towns are often particularly attractive for those looking to move into more idyllic surroundings without sacrificing many of the important amenities they currently enjoy.”
