New Housing Aims at Impacting UK Housing Shortage

The UK housing shortage is an issue which must be dealt with now or everyone will be paying the price in a short amount of time.  The Right to Build scheme is the chosen answer and the government has just approved funding for more building.  Eleven councils have just been given the green light to build as many as 3,000 homes with funding coming soon.

The 3,000 total homes to be built are broken up into 1,000 self-builds and 2,000 custom builds.  Hundreds of thousands of pounds are being extended to the councils in order to get the projects under way.

Brandon Lewis commented on the funding provided the councils, saying: "We're determined to help anyone who aspires to own their own home - whether that's buying on the open market through schemes like our Help to Buy, or to build.

"This is one of a range of measures we're taking to help aspiring homeowners, but also to get Britain building - and thanks to our efforts, housebuilding levels are at their highest since 2007 and rising."

UK Chancellor George Osborne made the announcement for the funding earlier in the year which did not ring that favorably with the opposing party.  The housing problem is seen as something needing much more than just houses built in eleven new councils in their opinion.

Emma Reynolds, Labour Shadow Housing Minister, commented on the timeline needed in order to make an impact on the housing shortage issue, saying: "Only Labour will make the fundamental changes to the market which are urgently needed by getting at least 200,000 homes built a year by 2020 and doubling the number of first-time buyers in the next 10 years.”
