Ecology

History

The Ecology Building Society has a much shorter history and a different vision that many of its fellow building societies. It was originally established in 1981 and is based in West Yorkshire and is a member of the Building Societies Association.

Their initial vision was to form a building society that specializes in properties that offer an ecological benefit to the environment relative to construction, land-use, or lifestyle. The original idea was formulated at a Green Party Conference by a solicitor who was looking for a large mortgage on a property that needed a significant amount of renovating.

Now, the Ecology Building Society offers mortgage products to customers across the UK. The main speciality remains renovations, and new builds on properties and projects that respect the environment. They like to repurpose old, run down properties and get them back into use.

The Ecology Building Society also offers other financial services including savings accounts, instant access accounts, a notice account, and individual savings accounts. Clients can access their mortgages and accounts online or by post.

There are now over 10,000 accounts and assets are growing at a very fast rate. They produce a newsletter and chose a different location every time for their AGM.

All mortgages and remortgages offered by the Ecology Building Society are in keeping with their vision of wanting to improve the environment. They promote energy efficient housing, ecological renovation and low-impact lifestyles. It has the following types of mortgage on offer:

  • Residential: Owner Occupiers
  • Buy to Let

Residential mortgages - after a period of two years, all residential base rate borrowers will benefit from a discount to their interest rate if they have met the terms laid out by the society. To become eligible for this reduction, the borrower must have complied with all general and special mortgage conditions set by the society. They must have conducted their account satisfactorily and be in full residence of the property. If this is found to be correct this discount will be guaranteed for the remainder of the term. All of these mortgages are based on a variable negotiable rate set by the Society. Fees may apply depending on which mortgage product you choose.

Non residential - all the rates are negotiable. Fees may apply depending on which mortgage product you choose.
